Ruin of the Reckless is a 2-D action rogue-like that focuses on fast paced melee combat and quick movement. The developer Faux Operative Games aims to capture the feeling of 16-bit classics while providing a major graphical update over that era. Although the gameplay will up the pace, challenge and randomness to channel what we’ve come to expect from modern rogue-likes.
There are currently very few story details known beyond the initial set up. – Since the beginning of time, the tower has existed, operating as a beacon to attract the souls of the living and the dead. – Those with recklessness in their hearts. Wayward spirits are bound to the tower, destined to be forgotten. There are whispers of a legend that whoever reaches the tower’s peak will be granted one wish. Throughout the game, you will explore the mysterious and randomly generate tower that changes with each ascent to discover its true purpose and see your one true wish be granted.
Ruin of the Reckless is an action game, so combat is central to the gameplay. The hero’s skills and weapons will be upgradable through leveling up. You can wield two weapons at the same time that will assist with crushing the giant hordes of enemies with your powerful melee attacks. Faux Operative Games have stated that the game will be accessible – easy to pick up, difficult to master the higher levels of the tower.
The tower is jam-packed full of items that will shake-up the gameplay. Spell books are secret tomes that contain unique abilities with set amount of charges which you can augment by leveling up. Skills orbs grant permanent abilities or you can wield them as powerful weapons. There is the possibility that they will blow up in your face. Dashing – there’s a whole range of stylish boots hidden throughout the tower that can modify dashing abilities by extending the dash, leaving a trail of fire, flying over hazards or chaining multiple dashes together just to name a few.
Cards act as modifiers that are unlocked by completing special in-game challenges and you retain them between play-throughs. Death’s Door is a card that activates one hit kill for both you and the enemies, while Baby Mode makes the game significantly easier (may not want to share that one). Each card has a benefit plus drawback and multiple cards can be chained together for custom effects.
Ruin of the Reckless has already been Greenlit on Steam. The finished version will include either a 2 or 4 player co-operative campaign plus versus mode. Faux-Operative Games is a two man team who are inspired by maniac brawlers and co-op dungeon crawlers. They are currently looking for pixel and concept artists that are willing to contribute to the project.
Ruin of the Reckless is scheduled for an early 2017 release. Stay tuned to PN2 for more coverage of the game in the near future.
