Meet Finch. Finch is a tongue gripping, gun-slingin, half human, half frog – a mongrel! Mongrel is not the cliché story of a cursed prince awaiting the kiss of a beautiful princess. In fact, Mongrel aims to distance itself from said clichés and poke fun at the same time. This distinction begins with Finch who is not your typical adventurer. Finch is selfish and only stumbles into situations while searching for his father who has the cash and ID required to purchase the toy Finch is wanting. And we all know the best ‘toys’ are the ones that require ID to buy (wink wink). Having a selfish protagonist will create many opportunities for comedic moments for Finch to become a unique hero.
Mongrel is a 2D action-platformer with metroidvania elements that’s currently in development for Windows, Mac and Linux. Developer Fischmell wants to challenge players by incorporating intense combat sections, but also mind-bending puzzles. The trailer doesn’t portray these moments and instead, focuses on the art style and humour. It’s obvious that Finch will have a distinct personality. Fischmell has stated that inspiration comes from the absurdity and parodies found in Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and gameplay elements of The Legend of Zelda and Metroid style games. Finch will be able to possess a diverse arsenal of weapons and items that will be useful throughout the game and will never feel useless outside of specific dungeons.
Adventure games are known for their diverse landscapes and plethora of creatures, and Mongrel is no exception. The human town will operate as the overworld, with three levels that separate the different social classes of the community. To the west there’s a jungle where the trolls live in trees to protect themselves from the evil that corrupts the undergrowth. Inside of the volcano, there’s a chamber that the trolls use as a garbage dump. Finch will have to dig through the waste to reach his goal. In the east there’s an icy island haunted by the dead and deep underground is where all the banished creatures live. All the main characters are voiced by voice actors, and it appears Finch will get an animal companion or two.
Mongrel has just launched on Kickstarter and is off to a good start. As Fischmell are based in Norway, the currency of the campaign is set to Norwegian Krone. Fischmell is seeking 230,000NOK ($27,500 U.S. or $37,000 AUD) to fund Mongrel. Early bird copies are still available for $10 U.S., and there are many more tiers available if you’re interested in soundtracks and art books.
If successfully funded, Mongrel is set for release in late 2017. You can learn more about it and support the game here.
