19 Years after its release, Rare’s epic shooter Goldeneye 007 lives on through Goldeneye Source, a full re-imagining of the multiplayer from the N64 classic. So Goldeneye Source is not a new mod, in fact, it’s been around since 2010. Although within this past week, the game received its first update in more than three years.
Thanks to a group of highly motivated modders, this update brings crisp HD graphics and a wide array of new gameplay features. For the first time, the memorable campaign level ‘Dam’ can be used for competitive play. In total, Goldeneye Source now includes 25 maps, 28 weapons, 10 different multiplayer modes, and achievements.
Goldeneye Source was created using Valve’s Source engine, the same set of tools used to create Counter Strike and Half Life 2. The good news is that Goldeneye Source is a free download from the developer’s website. The bad news is that it does not feature a re-imagining of the single player campaign. The developer stated that they simply do not have the resources to create it.
I find it reassuring to know one of the greatest first-person shooters of all time lives on. For England James!
