I had a funny thought when I came across Death Stair, Fun Sponge Games racing/sports multiplayer title about trying to reach the top of some deadly and defended stairs. For some reason it reminded me of one of Grand Theft Auto V’s many multiplayer modes, where a a team of players drive down a couple of tankers, trucks and cars down a massive ramp towards a group of competing players below, trying to shoot them down.

Death Stair feels a little like that game mode, except here it’s a 3vs1 contents with one player throwing everything at three others as they try to climb up. In this competitive stair climbing competition, the challengers will do their best to reach the top of tall, sometimes winding stair cases as the fourth player, using whatever he or she can, will try to stop them before time runs out.

Those climbing the stairs have but their own serpentine like movements in their attempts to evade and move up the staircase as fast as possible. The fourth player, however, has a host of wicked (yet fun) attacks such as bouncing beach balls, mines, cannons, fireballs and ice attacks. You name it they’ve got it available. The maps become increasingly more crazy and unique, twisting turns, corners and one map (at least from what I can tell from the trailer below) that has multiple finish lines.

The reason why I came up with that GTA mode in my head was the idea of competing at two different ends of a sloping arena. It’s not really something you commonly see in a video game, yet it’s so entertaining to watch that I’m a little surprised there haven’t been more like it. On the plus side, here it’s more about having fun with crazy contraptions than it is trying to wipe someone from existence. Also it’s not about drugs, gangs or killing people, always a plus.

It does look like pure fun, especially for the younger crowd. Death Stair hits Steam August 17th.
