Gamescom has been running over the past few days and whilst there have been a few surprises (seriously, what’s up with that Metal Gear spin-off?) and plenty of new details on some upcoming AAA titles, there’s one trailer reveal that has me super excited for what’s to come.
Of course, I’m talking about the Banjo-Kazooie inspired Yooka-Laylee, a 3D platformer that will hopefully live up to the hype far more than its fellow Kickstarter success story, Mighty No 9. If the trailer below is anything to go by (and the fact that developers Playtonic are an experienced crew who worked on the Bird and Bear franchise, among others), I don’t think we have anything to worry about. Check it out:
It really does look like Rare reborn, harking back to the classic late late 90’s hits but with a lick of modern paint. Given the way indie games can influence the market, just look at the amount of 2D platformers and 4 player party/couch games there are lately, I do hope Yooka can reach an audience and inspire a new generation of 3D action platform games. Maybe it will convince more than just Nintendo that there’s still a market out there for them.
I can’t wait to get my hands on it properly, but for now we will have to settle for video footage of Kickstarter backers playing an early demo and this slice of in-game action. Yooka-Laylee releases in early 2017 on a number of platforms, including PS4, PC and Xbox One. The characters are also set for a cameo appearance in the upcoming Team 17 release, Worms WMD.
