SandG_screen_5You might remember United Front Games from their work on the successful open world game, Sleeping Dogs. Since they don’t own the license and Square Enix hasn’t confirmed a sequel (for whatever reason), the Canadian studio isn’t sitting around twiddling their thumbs. Instead, they’ve come up with their own new IP, and this week they dropped all the juicy details.

Titled Smash & Grab, this 3v3 brawler tells the story of a dystopian future, where a new underground competition has emerged, pitting lucky (or unlucky) teams against each other in an attempt to loot and destroy $50k’s worth of goods first. Blood will be spilt, windows smashed and bones broken as you fight to reach the goal through any means possible.

Going by the trailer, it feels like colour and unusual setting of Sunset Overdrive mixed with an online shooter or old-school beat ’em up. The character designs are very tongue-in-cheek and will no doubt refer to a number of well known sci-fi and action tropes in the process, whilst a crafting system will allow you to build and upgrade whatever weapons you need to get the job done, be they melee or ranged. If the hand-to-hand combat is anything like Sleeping Dogs itself, it should add some much needed originality to the online versus scene.

United Front Games are aiming for Steam Early Access some time in September, with a small handful of maps and modes available for players to test out and provide feedback on. The trailer suggests it’s been in development for a good while now, but I’d suggest it might stay in Early Access for a short while as further modes and tweeks are added. We’ll keep a close eye on it and will hopefully get some hands-on time soon.
