In case you’ve been sitting on the fence over whether to play Overwatch, or you’re like me and continually watch Let’s Play videos and highlights of cool, fancy players doing crazy things instead of actually playing the game, here’s something that might sway you.
Blizzard are opening up Overwatch for free over this coming weekend, September 10th to 12th, on Xbox One and PS4. The team have kindly put together a blog post with every answer to every question you may have about the special event, but here’s the basics.
For starters, you’ll need an Xbox Live Gold to gain access to the open weekend, but you won’t need PlayStation Plus if you’re a PS4 owner. You’ll have to browse through either the Xbox Live Store or PSN Store for the ‘Overwatch: Origins Edition Free Weekend’ to be able to download it when the time comes. From there, you’ll have access to all 22 characters and almost every map and mode except for Competitive.
One neat positive, any progress you make over the weekend will carry over if you decide to then purchase the game, though achievements and trophies have been disabled for the event. Bit of a shame that one, but understandable all the same.
If you’re wondering why there isn’t a free weekend on PC, it’s probably because the master race is the dominant platform to play Overwatch and all, plus this is clearly trying to broaden the player-base on both consoles. Not that there isn’t anyone playing it right now, I’d say there’s a decent spread of players, though there’s likely more on PS4 considering the sales numbers.
Will you be playing Overwatch for free this weekend? Or are you knee-deep in the franchise already? Let us know in the comments below. I might put YouTube down for a while and finally play it properly. Who knows, it’s a free world.
