What a year for Insomniac. First they re-release one of their greatest games in Ratchet & Clank to critical acclaim (shame about the movie though), then they release their first ‘indie’ adventure in Songs of the Deep, and then they reveal their next big IP is none other than Spider-Man! Anyone else would be happy with just that, maybe take a holiday and relax for a while. Insomniac though? They’ve just released their first VR experience, and it’s not what you think.
Feral Rites is an adventure-brawler where you battle across a mysterious island to avenge the death of your father. Instead of just playing it in your typical ‘holding the controller while you sit on the couch’ style, which is so 2015, Insomniac has published the game for Oculus Rift. Essentially that means you’ll have the entire action played out up close and personal, which is certainly a unique experience and one that stands out a little from all the first person games that litter the VR space in these early moments.
Reminds me a little of Altered Beast, where you can change your form into a beastly entity for extra damage and new moves. I wonder if Sega ever thought of making an Altered Beast VR game … maybe now they will! In the case of Feral Rites, there’s plenty of content to get through and secrets to find in Ratchet & Clank tradition (and I kinda wish I had an Oculus to play it). It’s available now so go check it out and let us know what you think.
