As the war rolls on against the Burning Legion and the heroes of Overwatch fight to bring peace to the world, players and developers alike took the time to come together and celebrate at this years annual Blizzcon.
Kicking off with our newest band of heroes where fans were finally introduced to the long awaited Sombra, hacker extraordinaire and infiltration specialist. Boasting a range of skills that would put the predator to shame Sombra’s abilities to shut down her opponents skills and barriers, provide cover with machine gun fire and control the field and corral the enemy with her teleportation is sure to attract favor from Overwatch’s more strategic players making her a valuable asset on the battlefield. Sombra’s announcement comes at a favorable time for players alongside the announcement of the Overwatch Pro League which will finally give players the chance to compete at a professional e-sports level (you can read more about that here).
Alongside these major bombshells were the announcements of a new control and arena map as well as a new arcade mode which will allow players to play in smaller 1v1 and 3v3 Mashups.
Back on Azeroth, things are beginning to heat up following the return of one of Warcraft’s most successful dungeons in a patch last month. With Karazhan’s return players both new and old finally had the opportunity to delve within the crumbling tower and gain access into Medivh’s inner sanctum. Alongside Karazhan players were also able to continue the Banshee Queen’s war on the Vrykul Gods with Trial of Valor and continue the campaign against Gul’dan in Suramar.
If this wasn’t enough to keep players satiated they got more than they expected with the announcement of several future patches and all the glorious content within. Before players return to the Broken Shore in Patch 7.2 a smaller patch, dubbed 7.1.5 will bring a handful of new content and welcome changes including class rebalancing and the addition of several “mini-holiday” events such as Ahn’Qiraj Remembrance Day and Volunteer Guard Day where players can celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the opening of the Gates of Ahn’Qiraj and spend a day as member of the city guard respectively. Around this time the Nighthold raid is also presumed to unlock bringing the campaign against Gul’dan and the fight for Suramar to its dramatic conclusion with the return of Illidan Stormrage.
Patch 7.2 will bring the chance to return to the broken shore and exact their revenge against the legion as their invasion of Azeroth intensifies with the resurgence of assault events all across the world. All 12 Class halls will come together to create the new Armies of Legionfall faction bringing with them a Garrison-lite base that will have players building up reputation and selection buildings to be constructed for additional buffs and bonuses. Making their way through the new raid-themed 5-man “Cathedral of Eternal Night” and toned down versions of the current mythic only dungeons the war’s conclusion will take place within the Tomb of Sargeras itself as the highest levels of legion command are once more driven from the world.
Following their defeat on Azeroth players will continue to pursue the Legion in Patch 7.3 as they take the fight to the former Draenei homeworld of Argus. Details on this patch are slim at present though more information is expected to come sometime in 2017.
Rounding out the convention among updates for both Hearthstone and StarCraft III was the announcement that the Necromancer class would be returning to the franchise in 2017. We touched on it briefly yesterday, but here’s the full details. With the release of an upcoming character pack, the Necromancer will come with an in-game pet, two additional character slots, two additional stash tabs on PC, a portrait frame, pennant, banner and banner sigil. Bringing both classic abilities such as “corpse explosion” and “bone spear” and new abilities such as the new “Command Skeletons”, a revamped version of Diablo 2’s raise skeletons ability which will allow players to control up to 5 skeletons with a greater degree of control than that of the Witch Doctor and their Fetishes.
So maybe not the Diablo 4 announcement we were hoping for, but there’s some cool stuff coming our way across the entire Blizzard lineup. What are you most excited for? Let us know in the comments below.
